The City of Burnaby and the Province of British Columbia proclaimed March 4, 2008, as TB Vets Day, in recognition of our contribution to the people of British Columbia. To celebrate, we invited local elementary school students to come learn about what we do.
Kiley, a respiratory therapist, explains how RTs put tubes in patients who can't breathe.
What do mucus and marshmallow have in common? They are both difficult to breathe through! That what the five elementary school classes who came to our open house learned. In order to teach the children how an asthma attack feels, registered respiratory therapists Kiley Cindrich and Natasha Kassam, and respiratory therapy student Sharleen Saran had the children push a straw through a marshmallow. Next, the children had to run in place, and then breathe through the straw. "That's hard!" all the children agreed.
In addition to talks by respiratory therapists, the children also heard about tuberculosis from Jim Sun, a tuberculosis researcher at a lab that TB Vets provides funding for. Tuberculosis kills one person every 20 seconds across the world. The children leaned that best thing way to prevent the transmission of diseases like tuberculosis is to cover your mouth and nose when you cough and sneeze, and wash you hands!
Nav shows students how she makes beautiful coloured ribbons.
The classes toured our facility, and learned about all of the various products made by TBV business solutions, the business unit of TB Vets. The colourful ribbons that Nav Pooni creates were the favourite. The children got to take home a few beautiful ribbon samples.
An interpreter was on hand to allow the students to talk to our deaf staff members. The students even learned how to say "thank you" in sign language.
Everyone, staff and students alike, had a wonderful time at our open house. The success of this event was due in large part to our dedicated volunteers. TB Vets would like to thank: Kiley Cindrich, Natasha Kassam, Sharleen Saran, Jim Sun, Christine Manzer, Marguerite Ghislieri and Lynda Skipworth for their hard work. Particular thanks go to Kiley, Natasha and Sharleen, who taught children about breathing for five hours, after working a 12-hour night shift at Vancouver General Hospital.
All of the children would like to thank Valley Bakery for their generous donation of cookies to this event. They were delicious.
