For thousands of British Columbians, breathing is a struggle. They might be accident victims, premature babies with immature lungs, heart attack and stroke patients, or people who live with asthma and emphysema.
When it comes to their care, a respiratory therapist will likely play a vital role on the healthcare team.
Respiratory therapists are healthcare professionals who assist physicians with the diagnosis and treatment of lung disorders. From 1994 and 2006 TB Vets has provided over $72,000 to Thompson Rivers University (formerly University College of the Cariboo), helping BC's future respiratory therapists to realize their educational goals.
Centrally located, TRU is the only place in British Columbia where students can train to become respiratory therapists. Those involved with the Respiratory Therapy (RT) Program at TRU consider their program to be the best!
RT students learn theoretical subjects, such as anatomy, and receive clinical training in hospital and home care settings. Following graduation, students are eligible to write the national registration examinations as provided by the Canadian Board for Respiratory Care.
Successful candidates earn the CSRT Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential. UCC graduates are consistently ranked in the Top Three on this national exam.
Thanks to a generous bequest, in 2006 TB Vets Charitable Foundation increased our funding to eight $1,500 bursaries. Each bursary will cover the cost of that student's books for one year.
Congratulations to our 2006 Bursary Winners:
Kiley Cindrich from Langley
Rajni Kainth from Burnaby
Christa Sloan from Westbank

Most respiratory therapists work in hospitals. You'll find them in neonatal nurseries, operating rooms, intensive care units, general wards, and emergency departments. Respiratory therapists also work in the community, bringing their expertise to home care, teaching, research and rehabilitation.
They need good judgement, excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to maintain composure in critical medical situations.
TRU's Respiratory Therapy graduates receive high praise from the hospitals that employ them. Visit TRU's website for more information on this exciting program and rewarding career.
