Judy was born 14 weeks early. She weighed only 1 pound, 11 ounces, and her lungs were just 40% of normal size. The first time her mother had her out of the incubator to feed her, Judy had a heart attack right in her mother's lap.
As she grew, doctors found ways to help her heart, but Judy remained ill. She complained that she could feel "a gorilla on my chest." Most of her childhood was spent in hospital. Doctors did everything they could to help her, but they could not figure out what was wrong. Finally, when she was 16, doctors used a special piece of equipment to diagnose her severe asthma. That equipment was donated to the hospital through the generosity of TB Vets donors.

Judy had 3 heart attacks before the age of 2, but Judy and her mom always focused on the positive.
It was an enormous relief to Judy to finally learn what was wrong, and start treatment. Eight years later, doctors found a way to correct her major heart problem. Today, her asthma remains a problem, but she is much stronger. Her hope is that with research, doctors will find new treatments for her asthma.
In the meantime, Judy, who was once confined to a mobility scooter, is now healthy enough to travel, go to school, and pursue a career. She recently visited Cancun, where she was able to do what she had dreamed of as a small child, sick in hospital, watching the Discovery Channel--swim with dolphins.
At birth, Judy's mom was told Judy might not survive. Judy has never given up. Because of the generosity of TB Vets donors, TB Vets was able to give hospitals the equipment needed to diagnose her breathing problem. She is just one of thousands of patients whose lives were saved and made better by the respiratory equipment that TB Vets provides to hospitals across BC. TB Vets also supports research into respiratory problems, and provides bursaries to respiratory therapy students. Our goal is to make sure that British Columbians who need help breathing have the best care in the world. Your donations make our work possible. Please, donate now.
