Baby Finnegan and mom Cheryl Stevenson, BC Women's Hospital

Baby Finnegan

Even with Cheryl Stevenson’s nursing background, there is nothing that prepared her for the trauma, stress, and anxiety of the premature birth of her son Finnegan.

Born almost three months early and weighing 3lbs 4oz, Finnegan faced numerous complications and needed many kinds of mechanical ventilation during his time in the neonatal intensive care unit at BC Women’s Hospital.

The challenges of being born so early were made even more difficult when Finnegan suffered a spontaneous bowel perforation and serious septic infection at just 10 days old.

“We were uncertain if Finnegan would survive,” says Cheryl. “I think Finnegan is only here with us today because the life-saving respiratory equipment was available and doctors and nurses were able to do what they do best.”

In addition to recognizing the exceptional efforts of the team of medical professionals who saved her son’s life, Cheryl also understands the importance of medical equipment in the care of patients who could not survive without it.

And she is also aware of the key role of donors in arming our frontline medical heroes.

“Words just cannot convey the level of gratitude I feel towards those who financially make it possible for this life-saving work to take place,” she says.

For over 75 years, TB Vets Charitable Foundation has proudly worked with donors to assist everyone from newborns with specialized breathing equipment to advanced life support for trauma patients.

This includes the purchase of ventilators for hospitals like BC Women’s.

“A lot of people don’t realize the costs of vital equipment required to care for patients who are critically ill,” says Cheryl.

For this loving mother, the opportunity to watch her son grow and hit milestones is a gift. It’s been made possible with the help of donors like you.*
