Help Us Move Closer to a TB-Free BC

Wednesday August 27, 2025 at 12:00 PM PDT via ZOOM

One in four people worldwide carries the TB infection — most without symptoms. Without treatment, 5–10% will develop active TB, a highly contagious and dangerous disease.

In Canada, over 80% of TB cases occur in people born outside the country, making broad testing costly and inefficient. But what if we could identify exactly who should be tested — and treat the disease before it becomes active?

Dr. James Johnston, a TB physician and researcher at the BC Centre for Disease Control and Head of Respiratory Medicine at VGH, is developing a groundbreaking online TB risk assessment tool. This platform will help doctors and individuals pinpoint risk factors and make testing more precise, cost-effective, and impactful.
